| Program Description: |
Did you know …. Fall Protection continues to be one of the Top 5 most frequently cited safety standards by federal and state compliance inspectors; and the US Department of Labor (DOL) lists “falls from height” as one of the leading causes of traumatic occupational death, accounting for eight percent of all occupational fatalities from trauma.
Since governmental units are under the general industry safety standards, fall protection must be provided at 4 feet or greater. Moreover, fall protection must be provided when working over dangerous equipment and machinery regardless of the fall distance. Identifying fall hazards and deciding how best to protect our employees is the first step in reducing or eliminating fall hazards.
The Fall Protection program will cover the following key curriculum components:
- Fall Protection Regulatory Requirements
- Developing a Fall Protection Program and Plan
- Fall Hazards and Identification
- Types of Fall Protection Systems:
- Personal Fall Arrest Systems (PFAS)
- Guardrail Systems
- Specialized Systems (Safety Nets, Engineered Lifelines, Warning Lines, etc.)
- Fall Equipment Inspection Criteria and Guidelines
- Users
- Annual-Competent Persons
- Fall Equipment Storage and Maintenance Criteria and Guidelines
- Basic Rescue Requirements and Preparedness
- Training Requirements
- Hands-On Lab Portion
- PFAS – Proper Donning and Doffing
- Lifelines
- Anchor Devices
- Tripods and Jibs
- Confined Space Fall Hazards and Devices
- Group Discussion - Municipal Hazards and Identification
- Selecting and Implementing the appropriate Fall Protection System for the type of work application or condition
As a result of participating in this training program, you should be able to: apply the OSHA regulations to specific fall hazards in order to determine the minimum fall requirements; identify fall hazards within your municipal work settings and facility applications; and select and implement the appropriate fall hazard device, system or plan based on your specific work criteria or conditions.
IMPORTANT NOTE: You are highly encouraged to submit digital pictures that depict some of your work sites or applications where fall hazards exist and you are looking for the correct way to ensure proper fall protection (i.e. Walking on elevated overflow troughs during maintenance activities, roofing park pavilions, loading and unloading materials from a forklift onto an elevated mezzanine, using maintenance scaffolds, etc.). You can bring the digital pictures on a CD-ROM or memory stick to the training program; OR you can e-mail them in advance to bes@cmic.com.
