Program Description: According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission, 200,000 children are treated for playground accidents annually. Of these, 70% (or 140,000) occurred at public parks and school yards. Does your equipment measure up? How many preventable injuries occurred in your parks?

Participants will become familiar with the US Consumer Products Safety Commission Guidelines and the ASTM Standard for Public Use Playground. This program will also teach individuals the following:

  • How to identify playground safety hazards and the steps needed for corrections.
  • How to conduct an audit of your playgrounds.
  • How to identify equipment differences and understand their impact on playground safety.
  • Safety in accessibility and the recommendations of the ASTM standard.
  • The characteristics of the various surfaces used on the playground.
  • How to design a playground that protects children from injury.
  • How to use test probes and gauges.
  • Hands-on playground inspection.

    Lunch will be provided on-site.
