Program Description: One of the more challenging situations a supervisor or manager may be faced with is how to deal with an employee who is ill or injured and cannot currently perform the essential functions of their job. What rights does the employee have? What options are available to the supervisor? Does it matter if the injury occurred on or off the job? What do we do if the illness or injury is likely to be permanent? Could we be sued if we do the wrong thing? These are just some of the questions that come up when we are faced with this situation. In this training program we will be answering all of these questions and many more. Program objectives:

  • We will briefly discuss some of the laws you will have to be familiar with when handling an employee who is unable to perform their job (short term or long term)
  • We will review the Worker’s Compensation law and discuss benefits/restrictions available to employees and how duty disability programs are affected by WC benefits
  • We will discuss light duty/return to work programs for both on and off the job illnesses/injuries and the impact an employee who is off of work can have on an organization’s WC premium
  • We will discuss fitness for duty evaluation for both on and off the job injuries and illnesses and review some sample “fitness for duty” policies
  • We will briefly review the disability options that may be available to employees under the Wisconsin Retirement System (40.63, 40.65 & LTDI)

The format will be group discussion and lecture based with an opportunity for participants to bring up issues, concerns or ideas that they would like to discuss or share with other participants. We also encourage participants to bring policies, programs, forms, etc. on the topic at hand to share with other participants. The more we can learn from each other the stronger we all become. CVMIC has offered numerous programs in the past using this format and we have received a lot of positive comments from participants.
