| Program Description: |
ADA Title II – How to Come into Compliance Title II of the ADA applies to State and local governments. It prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in all services, programs, and activities provided by the municipality. Thus, people with disabilities must have an equal opportunity to participate in and benefit from a municipality’s services, programs, and activities. To accomplish this, the ADA sets requirements for facilities, new construction and alterations, communications with the public, and policies and procedures governing municipal programs, services, and activities. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a very complicated law and one that many organizations are still not in full compliance with. In this program we will: • Review the ADA Tool Kit developed by the Department of Justice to assist municipalities in coming into compliance with ADA Title II • Talk about the US Access Board, their mission and how their guidelines come into play with local municipalities • Review the DOJ’s Civic Access project and how this could impact on local government • Discuss how to handle a request for a reasonable accommodation • Discuss the new changes to ADA that have just been adopted by the Department of Justice and what municipalities will have to do to come into compliance with the new standards (standards will be handed out during the program) NOTE: Each participant will receive an ADA Title II binder with a wealth of information including sample policies, forms, checklists and other compliance materials. Along with the binder there will also be two CD-ROM’s; one from the Department of Justice with all of the materials that are available to local government from DOJ and a second CD-ROM with a wide variety of supporting materials including all the handouts from the program. The format for this program will be group discussion, case study and lecture based with an opportunity for participants to bring up issues, concerns or ideas that they would like to discuss or share with other participants. We also encourage participants to bring policies, programs, forms, etc. on the topic at hand to share with other participants. The more we can learn from each other the stronger we all become. NOTE: We have limited parking at the CVMIC office. Below we have attached a map with our designated parking spaces for your reference. Please DO NOT park in the medical lot adjacent to our building. |
