| Program Description: |
Pre-Supervisory Certification
The intent of this certification program is to provide a broad range of topics geared to employees who may someday want to compete for a supervisory job, or simply just want or need to know more about being a supervisor. While some of the material will have practical application, the rest will be more information sharing that should broaden the knowledge of the participants on what it takes to be an effective supervisor. This certification program will be a precursor to the Certificate in Supervision and targeted at non-supervisory employees.
Session #1 – Supervisory Competencies that Every Supervisor Needs – in this session we will review the skills, knowledge’s, and abilities that a supervisor must possess to be successful. We will also provide an action plan that participants will complete that should help them in assessing where they are today and where they want to be in the future along with a methodology to get there. The following will be included in this session:
- Discussion of a “Personal skills action plan”
- Exercise - Best/worst boss
- Start Right/Stay Right – video, booklet and discussion
- Exercise - Cost of an Employee
- Building your Supervisory Skills
- Tasks you might perform
- Supervisory competencies you will need
- Your skill, knowledge & ability and what you may need to develop
- Things that might impact on how you get your job done
- Ethics for Everyone – video, booklet and discussion
Session #2 – Laws, Policies, Practices and Programs that Supervisors Must Know – in this session we will provide a brief overview of the various laws (employment, labor, constitutional, liability, etc.), policies and practices that every supervisor will need to know. There will also be a heavy concentration on safety and health in this session to educate participants on the importance of safety in the workplace and the costs associated with noncompliance. The following will be included in this session:
- Employment liability laws – Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, ADA, FMLA, FLSA and other EPL laws
- Important policies and rules
- Labor law
- Constitutional law
- Liability laws in Wisconsin
- Worker’s Compensation
- DOC laws and safety policies
- Key Elements of a safety and health program
- Safety training
- Safety awareness
- Accident investigation
- Return to work/light duty
- Accident analysis and costs
- Facility inspections
Session #3 – Managing the Process and Managing People – in this session we will discuss some of the key elements of managing the way work is accomplished. This will be done through the use of a case study where participants will plan the work, develop a preliminary budget and list and deal with problems they could face in completing their task. They will also look at the tools necessary to manage employees from hiring and orientation to coaching and development. The following will be included in this session:
- Discussion of key elements to managing the work – “Case Study – The Downtown Festival”
- Planning and scheduling – staff, materials, equipment, etc.
- Time management – your time and the time of your staff
- Budgeting – staying within designated funds or obtaining more if necessary
- Dealing with problems and interruptions – that seem to come up all the time
- Evaluating results – how did we do?
- Managing people
- Hiring
- Orientation and training
- Performance evaluations and job assignments
- Employee development – coaching, mentoring, etc.
- Dealing with employee performance issues – conflict resolution, discipline, EAP, etc.
Note:
While there is no requirement that participants attend all sessions or that they attend them in order, we are encouraging participants to go through Session #1 before the other two sessions. Participants that attend will receive a participant manual that includes the materials for the three sessions. As with the supervisory manual, this manual will be updated annually and will be on our secured website.
