Chainsaws are considered to be one of the most dangerous power tools in the world. In fact, over 32,000 chainsaw injuries that require medical attention occur annually in the United States and about 300 deaths occur annually in the United States from chainsaw related accidents. Ensuring that municipal employees are properly trained will help reduce the chances of an injury that occurs while an employee is operating a chainsaw. This introductory chainsaw safety and use course is designed for new operators. By the end of this course, individuals will be able to do the following:
• Explain the parts of a chainsaw
• Understand the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for operation
• Demonstrate how to properly start the chainsaw
• Understand and demonstrate the overall safe operation of the chainsaw
• Explain troubleshooting and proper maintenance
• Understand tree physiology and biology in relation to chainsaw operations
• Demonstrate safe chainsaw use in different settings (pruning, removal, storm damage, etc.)
